Earlier this year, I was waiting in line at the local Tims on a particularly busy Thursday morning. The staff must have been hit with a larger than unexpected rush for so early in the morning. Every coffee pot was empty, and every machine was brewing. The line was already ten deep ahead of me and starting to spill out the door behind. Trying to keep my mind from focusing on its desperate need for my morning joe, I attempted to strike up some casual small talk with the guy in front of me. ‘At least it’s not Monday!’ I said with a smirk. My (self-proclaimed) whit didn’t seem to lighten the spirits of the guy. Instead, he looked at me and said, ‘I’d rather be here than dealing with my foundation right now.’ I’ve had enough conversations with customers start with a similar sentiment to know right away that guy had a big problem on his hands. ‘Sinking or cracked’ was all I said in reply. Needles to say, the conversation continued with a story of a 10-year-old house and a living room taking a nosedive.
The next morning I stopped by the house to asses the situation. The home sat perched on a gentle slope with a view of the valley and river below. It’s no wonder the owner chose this west-facing location for the perfect retirement investment, but as soon as I walked around the front side, I saw the problem—visible cracks in the concrete patio, and an evident slope on the front of the house.
I could see the dismay on the face of the owner, but having seen this before, I knew this was a problem we could solve. Provincial Helical Piles was just the ticket. Together the homeowner and I walked through the specifics of how we could use our helical piles to not only secure the foundation and prevent further sinking but also lift the corner back to its proper level.
A few weeks later, after our engineer reviewed the project and provided the details we needed, the project was completed in only a couple of days. The homeowner was thrilled to know his home was saved from disaster. The family could sleep easy that night, knowing the home’s foundation was stable and secure.
As I loaded up the last of the tools, about to head back to the shop, the homeowner came out with a smile on his face. ‘That was the best cup of coffee I’ve ever bought!’ he said. I couldn’t agree more.
